The ESO Supernova Planetarium

The ESO Supernova Planetarium & Visitor Centre is shown in this aerial view. This unique vantage point showcases the architecture of Supernova, which was designed to resemble a close double-star system, with one star transferring mass to its companion. This astrophysical set-up will ultimately lead to the heavier component undergoing a titanic explosion known as a supernova, from which the cutting-edge public astronomy centre takes its name.

ESO Science Outreach Network

On 1 December 2017, the ESO Science Outreach Network (ESON) gathered together at the ESO Headquarters in Garching bei München, Germany. Apart from the important discussions they had, they visited the newly built ESO Supernova, Planetarium & Visitor Centre and had the chance to know more about the Extremely Large Telescope (ELT) on a test fulldome show.

The Navigator of Outer Space

Le Navigateur du Ciel (The Navigator of Outer Space) is a 360-degree fulldome (fish-eye) planetarium show produced by Point Du Jour/TOTAVISION Le Plus–Communauté Urbaine de Dunkerque/RSA Cosmos. The show is 30 minutes long and is available in French and English.

The plane of the Milky Way

The plane of the Milky Way — rippled with dust, gas and stars — elegantly stretches above three of the four Unit Telescopes of the Very Large Telescope (VLT) in this unusual fulldome fish-eye perspective from ESO’s Paranal Observatory in northern Chile. The red and green radiance scattering the sky is a luminescence known as airglow. Link Equirectangular projected version of this image
